Our Story
Welcome to the rich history of Ebony Steel Band, a pioneering force in the world of steelpan music. Established in the autumn of 1969 in Acton, London, by Cape James and Winston ‘P’ Joseph, Ebony's humble beginnings in Cape's garden shed marked the genesis of a remarkable journey.
Under the esteemed leadership of Augustine 'Pepe' Francis MBE, who assumed the role of Band Chairman in 1971 and Director in 2005, Ebony has soared to unprecedented heights. With over fifty years of dedicated leadership, Pepe continues to guide the fifth generation of Ebony Steel Band players.
Our legacy includes an unparalleled twenty-three victories at the UK National Panorama competition, with an extraordinary nine-year consecutive win streak from 1991 to 1999. Renowned pannist and arranger Annise 'Halfers' Hadeed played a pivotal role in our Panorama successes, collaborating with Ebony from 1989 to 2009.
Beyond our national triumphs, Ebony has proudly represented the UK on the international stage, competing in Trinidad three times and earning accolades such as the Queen's Award in 2005 for our unwavering community service.
At the heart of our sound is Dudley Dickson, Ebony's esteemed pan maker and tuner, whose innovative creations have left an indelible mark on the steelpan world.
Our commitment to nurturing the next generation is embodied in the Ebony Junior Band, founded in 2013 by David Ijaduola, which has secured five victories in the UK Junior Panorama Competition.
Driven by our passion for steelpan music, Ebony remains steadfast in our mission to promote this vibrant art form across the UK and Europe.
Through a diverse array of artistic opportunities and workshops, we continue to inspire individuals of all ages and backgrounds, both locally and on the global stage. Join us as we celebrate our rich heritage and share the magic of steelpan music with the world.
